When was the last time you went to see the dentist? Was it for your regular checkup? Was it for a dental emergency or a problem with your mouth or teeth? How often should you plan on settling down in the exam chair?

It is a good idea to see your dentist every six months for your routine cleanings and exams. These visits give your dentist a chance to clean the plaque and tartar from your teeth that you may have missed while brushing, and to examine your teeth and mouth for cavities, dental erosion, gum disease and other problems.

If you feel any pain or have any sensation out of the ordinary in your teeth or mouth, you should schedule an appointment with your dentist. If you notice blood when you brush or floss, your dentist should be consulted. If you are experiencing bad breath or an unpleasant taste in your mouth, you should let the dentist know. In particular, if you notice a change in the color or texture of your mouth, tongue or teeth, you should plan a visit with the dentist.

You should also contact your dentist if you are pregnant or think you might be. If you are diagnosed with a disease, allergy or a medical condition, your dentist should be alerted. If you start a new prescription or your prescription is changed, you call your dentist. It is also a good idea for your dentist to have the name and number of your primary care physician.
